Lake Placid
An 11 acre holding on Moose Island in Lake Placid. The Camp was a generous gift in 1950 of Eugene Schwaback of New York City. Because the camp was on an island, activities centered on camping and aquatic skills. In 1955 the first recorded occurrence of co-ed camping occurred and is undoubtedly the basis for co-ed exploring as we know it now. As Sabattis Scout Reservation became operational, it became less advantageous to operate Askenonta and the camp was closed in 1962. It was sold to New York State in 1972 for $85,000. It remains “forever wild”.
